Promoting Awareness
Of The Ex Forces Community

 
     
 

Aims and Objectives

 

To promote and establish a robust support system across Yorkshire for the most vulnerable ex forces community across our county.

(Especially those at risk of homelessness)

To gather information with regard the size and needs of this group.

To establish links with statutory and voluntary groups to achieve the outcomes above and build links to.

Encourage support through association; promoting forums and group therapies for local ex forces communities.

To challenge the Veterans Agency with regard the system used to determine pension payments and support available.

 
 

  

Benefits to signing up

 

Local ex forces communities can access the services they need when they need them.

 

Housing Providers, Statutory Services and Charities supporting them could agree to work in partnership to improve outcomes.

 

Extra funding could be requested from relevant sources to cover the shortfalls in this area.

Yorkshire becomes a leader in formulating and promoting a working model for providing the support veterans who encounter problems deserve.

Sue is available to run training days and workshops to promote the awareness programme.

Facts Found

 

  
1000 soldiers are discharged every year on “health grounds”.

 

8500 Veterans are detained in prisons.

 

No actual figures exists as to how many are in interacting with CMHT’S or probation or waiting for priority treatment.

 

American figures suggest between 40 and 50% of Soldiers returning from Afghanistan and Iraq suffer psychological problems on return.

 

MOD figures in this country claim 2 to 4 %.

 

Shelter suggest 1 in 3 street homeless are members of the ex forces community.
1 in 6 adults will have served with the forces.

 

A veteran aged 16-44 is twice as likely to be unemployed and 7 times more likely to develop mental health problems as his civilian counterpart.

 

Lastly a significantly higher proportion of the ex forces community choose to resettle in the Yorkshire and Humberside area making it the perfect place to start making an impact on the services they receive.
